18 Things To Raise A More Confident Child

his post is based on an article from acclaimed psychologist Carl Pickhardt.

Did you know that less than 1% of youth players reach the professional ranks?

You probably did, so do coaches. We state the obvious when we say that to break into these ranks you need to be beyond exceptional. We know all of this and we are objective enough to know that the chances of this happening are very, very slim. Yet it seems at times that we are willing to sacrifice it all for 3 points on Saturday. No matter the damage. We should remember that youth sports are about developing better players and better people, and that winning is most frequently not a good parameter of good coaching.

Carl Pickhardt, a psychologist and author of 15 parenting books, says on his article   ’18 Things to Raise a More Confident Child  that a kid who lacks confidence will be reluctant to try new or challenging things because they’re scared of failing or disappointing others. This can end up holding them back later in life and prevent them from having a successful career.

This article   invites all readers to self-reflect on:

  1. How do you do at tip #1 “appreciate effort, no matter if they win or lose?” and tip #8 “never criticize their performance”?
  2. How can we still give honest, realistic feedback while still implementing these strategies?
  3. In tip #4, the author encourages us to allow kids to “act their age”, are we doing this or demanding that they be ‘more serious’ and ‘act like grown ups’?
  4. How might you implement Tip #9 “Treat mistakes as building blocks for learning” and tip #13 “praise them when they deal with adversity”?

Thank you Parents for taking the time to read and reflect over these questions. You’re doing it for your children.

A great night for Rush women's soccer last night as our Academy Females beat Thunder Bay Impact 4-1 to win the Thunder Bay Women's League playoff championship! Not all was lost for Impact though (which is made up almost entirely of graduated Rush/Lakehead Express rep players) as they took home the silverware for winning the league championship! Rush soccer continues to dominate the Thunder Bay women's soccer landscape with two more championships! Congratulations to all players and coaches for continuing to make us proud #rushcap #rush_cap #futurestartsnow #tbaysoccer #superiorrushfc #thunderbaysoccer #rushsoccer #JoinTheRush

What a weekend for our Excel Males and Females in Appleton, Wisconsin! After a successful Day One with both teams going 2 and 0, both teams followed that up with another perfect record on Day Two. The girls started their day with a very tough 1-0 win over United FC from Iowa who also had a perfect record going into the third game, and then completed their perfect record with a 6-0 win over River Surge FC. The boys had to dig in their heels with two tough games where they were physically outmatched, but they let their ball movement do the talking with a 4-1 win over the Madison 56ers SC and then a gritty 4-2 win over Middleton United who were also undefeated going into the 4th game. Both teams end the weekend with a perfect 4 and 0 record and some great memories to cap off the 2025 outdoor season. Congratulations to all players and families, and kudos to Rob and Bree and the entire coaching staff this weekend #futurestartsnow #tbaysoccer #superiorrushfc #thunderbaysoccer #rushsoccer #JoinTheRush

Congratulations to our Academy Males & Jr Academy Females for winning the Tonka Splash tournament this past weekend in Minnetonka! The Tonka Splash is quickly becoming one of the premiere tournaments in the Midwest, but many games and divisions were cancelled due to weather. Of the 6 teams involved, only 4 got to play. The Academy Females narrowly missed out on the championship game, and the Jr Academy Males would have played in the finals had there been one for their division. All in all, it was a fantastic weekend with a second gold medal for the Jr Academy Females in 2 consecutive tournaments, and 2 gold medals for the Academy Males in 3 consecutive finals. Congratulations to all players, families and coaches for a fantastic weekend and making Rush Nation proud! #rushcap #rush_cap #futurestartsnow #tbaysoccer #thunderbaysoccer #superiorrushfc #rushsoccer #JoinTheRush
